Burrum Windfest 2017
Day 1 – 57 competitors pre -registered for the event. A couple were affected by the early effects of Cyclone Debbie and elected to stay home. 52 competitors signed on and attended briefing. This was followed by lots of windsurfer networking, socializing and catching up with old and new friends. The wind teased but never arrived.
Welcome night- A good night at the Burrum Heads Bowls Club. Thank you to the lucky draw sponsors Foodworks - Burrum Heads, Windsurfing Gear and extra special thankyou to BOARDCRAZY.
Simon from BOARDCRAZY surprised everyone by putting a brand new ISONIC into the draw. The lucky winner was Dennis Winstanley
Day 2 – Some wind at last. Everyone rigged their big gear and headed over to the Northern run. Lots of good runs along the bank. The committee set out buoys to mark the course and no bear aways was the rule of the day. Just old fashion straight line blasting against your mates. Dylan from KA 72 did a fantastic job analyzing tracks and sorting out the results
Beer and sausages after the days sailing went down well.
Day 3 - no wind, official sailing cancelled. Some people went out late and did get a bit of a sail at the top of the southern run.
Day 4 - Cyclone Debbie eventually crossed the coast up North which meant absolute zero wind at Burrum. Lots of competitors decided to head home before the big rain arrived.
Day 5 - The wind and rain arrived but so did the state-wide warning to stay off the water. All Queensland rivers were in flood. The committee had no choice but to call off anymore sailing due to flood waters. A couple of hardy sailors tried a high tide sail but quickly gave up.
Presentation was moved twice due to venues closing and no power. It was eventually held in front of Race HQ with lights supplied by the camping competitors. All prizes for the event were put into a random prize draw. The sponsors for the presentation random prize draw were Jordan’s Windsurf & SUP Shop, SurfFX , Sunshine Coast Sailboards and Elders Burrum Heads
